This June brings the highly-anticipated Le Mans 24 Hour Race where competition among hybrids is expected to be exceptionally high.  Audi, for one, is planning to bring their R18 e-tron Quattro prototype to the table. Among the prototype's many awe-inspiring features expected to 'wow' the crowd are a turbodiesel engine, electric flywheel hybrid technology, and all-wheel drive. The secret ingredient is, of course, the hybrid system, which adds over 100 bph to each of the front wheels.

Underscoring, this daring entry is a history of success at Le Mans 24. Audi has emerged victorious from 10 of the last 12 races. Audi Southampton, for one, is counting on another win this year.

In understanding many drivers are still skeptical about hybrid technology in terms of performance, Audi is also entering two TDI R18 ultras. Ultimately, they're out to prove Audi hybrid technology really is as potent as they say it is. Virtually the same design as the R18e-tron Quattro, minus hybrid technology, the two TDI R18 ultras will lend a kind of side-by-side comparison: hybrid versus traditional powerplant.

As far as looks are concerned, the Audi R18 e-tron Quattro prototype appears to be something out of a Transformers movie. It sits extremely low to the ground, has dramatic, oversized wheel bases, a sharply raked hood, air-plane inspired cabin, and a fin along its hood. More than aerodynamic, it's far out.
